Promotion Still On

By Peter Martin

It’s another tricky fixture for Highland this Saturday as they travel to play Dumfries Saints.

A strong squad makes the trip although there are changes with a mixture of injuries seeing Kevin Brown, Rob Eatough and Rupeni Rokoduguni out. Coming in are experienced players Craig Findalter, Ruaridh MacDonald and Stuart Watson. Highland didn’t have that emphatic a win at Canal Park earlier in the season, but Coach Dave Carson knows what his squad has to do. What could make this game even tighter is the heavy Dumfries pitch, which if wet could hamper Highland’s mobile game plan. Another related weather problem could be travel and won’t be revealed until Saturday morning.

The players have pulled together well since the loss of Porky and they could have gained some sort of closure with the funeral on Thursday. A very large congregation attended filling the Methodist Church to over-flowing and the moving tributes and service were led by former Highland player, now minister, Stuart MacKay.

Highland’s 2nd XV boosted club morale by convincingly winning the Brin Cup last Saturday and this weekend they get back to league business with the visit of RAF Lossiemouth. Match form suggests another win for Highland to stay on top of the league. Coach Brian Bell has lost the imposing figure of Stuart Watson who travels with the 1st XV, but he is replaced by young Stuart Gillespie who starts. The coach has his squad well prepared to maintain winning form.

Junior Matches
The weather and opposition cancellations have been a problem for the past couple of weekends. All five squads were meant to travel to play Granite City this weekend, but this sees the U18’s now travel to play Ross Sutherland on Saturday with a 11.45am kick-off. On Sunday the U15’s are now at home and play Moray/Huntly (Muntly) with a 1pm kick-off. The U16’s, U14’s and U13’s are currently on track to play Granite City, the U16’s kick-off at 1pm and the U14’s/U13’s at 12 Noon. Again keep an eye on the club web sources to check on the matches.
