Win Two Matches For Porky!

The club has certainly gone through the emotional wringer after the sudden loss of Coach and club legend Alister ‘Porky’ Wemyss.

Yet Porky himself would certainly want the club to press on and build on the progress made by Highland Rugby Club, success very much enabled by his important contributions. This means the players focusing on the two big matches this Saturday.

The 1st XV are on track for promotion and the match against visitors and league leaders Biggar could see them look to go up league winners. It will be a very tough match as Biggar have a very talented side, having lost only one fixture, run in big scores while conceding only 102 points in sixteen matches. Coach Dave Carson certainly knows the task his squad faces, but he is buoyed by the fact that the side he has selected is possibly the strongest that the club can field. It is a much changed and improved line-up to the one that lost to Biggar at Hartree Mill and Coach Carson feels his players can raise their game for this encounter. Taking something from the game is important with defeat almost certainly meaning chasing promotion as runners-up. There will also be the benefit of the fine home pitch and the large and vocal home support. Don’t forget it’s still the early 2pm kick-offs.

Before the kick-off both Highland squads will line-up with Biggar for 30 seconds silence followed by 30 seconds applause in memory of Porky. His funeral will be on Thursday, 24th January at the Inverness Methodist Church, Huntly Street, Inverness at 12.15pm. We will also be remembering former Highland President J.A.D. MacCallum who passed away last week. Alisdair, as he was known, served as president from 1979 to 1982. His funeral is on the same day at the Crown Church at 12 Noon.

Squad: 1 Lewis Sinclair, 2 Kevin Brown, 19 Murdo Paterson, 4 Oscar Baird, 5 Stuart MacDonald (cc), 16 Callum Carson, 7 Gordon Gregor, 8 Andrew Findlater, 9 Will Kelly, 10 Iain Chisholm, 11 Steven Rutledge, 12 Seumus Ross, 13 Rob Eatough, 14 Rory Cross (CC), 15 Rupeni Rokoduguni. Replacements: 17 Jonny Milton, 18 Sean Blair, 20 Ruaridh NacDonald, 21 Rory Carson. No Number Six worn in memory of Nairn MacEwan and number Three belongs to Porky.

The 2nd XV (Raptors) have a big match as they take on Kinloss Eagles in the Brin Cup Final. This match will be played after the 1st XV match with a 4pm kick-off under floodlights. The squad guided by coach Brian Bell has forged an unbeaten run in all matches this season and the form book, Highland top of North Two and Kinloss mid-table of North 3, suggests the Highland should lift the first silverware of the season. The squad assembled is very strong as the festive break has allowed many players to rest and recover. Yet Coach Bell is not going to take things for granted as a forces side is always capable of springing a surprise. The players will also have a huge home support to cheer them on.

Two wins for Porky would be a massive morale boost for Highland in this difficult period.

Squad: 1 Craig MacDiarmid, 2 Alex MacDonald, 3 Gary MacKenzie, 4 Tom Smith, 5 Kenny Cameron (c), 6 Liam Quinn, 7 Ben Gordon, 8 Calum MacPherson, 9 Andrew Kellock, 10 Craig Irvine, 11 Connor Ross, 12 Michael Griffin, 13 David Titterington, 14 Ewan Sime, 15 Andrew Cook. Replacements: 16 Douglas Darling, 17 Stuart Watson, 18 Jordan Coia, 19 Robbie Rapson, 20 Rod Andean, 21 Craig Findlater, 22 Callum Anderson.

Junior Matches
There was going to be a full programme of junior matches with the youngsters playing Deeside. Unfortunately, Saturday’s U18’s match and Sunday’s U15 matches have been postponed as Deeside can’t raise squads. The U16’s have cancelled their match so they can play their rearranged Caley Cup match with Moray/Huntly (Muntly) with a 1pm kick-off at Canal Park on Sunday. The U14’s and U13’s have stuck to their original plans and they travel to Aberdeen-shire for their friendly matches against Deeside.
